“No one leaves home unless home is the mouth of a shark.”

-Warsan Shire

Since 2015, photojournalist Thomas E. Franklin has explored the topics of forced migration and border security, which have become one of the most critical issues of our time, as war, poverty, and persecution continue to drive record numbers of people from their homes worldwide. Whether it be deadly civil war in Syria, or crushing poverty and the failure of governments in Central America, the flow of forced migrants is a human catastrophe that has caused the displacement of nearly 79.5 million people during the last decade. This virtual exhibit explores the factors forcing people to migrate or flee their homes. It also examines the overwhelming obstacles refugees face while trying to seek asylum in the U.S., and the European Union, as well as the process of resettlement and assimilation -in the U.S. and abroad.
